TOPIC 8: Mothballs: not just for humanshttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/76115.stmMothballs are commonly used by humans to keep moths and carpet beetles away from clothes. How does mothballs work? According to researchers, naphthalene, is the active ingredient in mothballs. Curious why the termites were not affected by naphthalene, the scientists carried out tests on the termites greatest enemy, the fire ants, and termites itself. Apparently, termites were not being affected in anyway, but the fire ant were immobolised.
Therefore, mothballs can not only be used by humans to keep insects away from their clothings, but mothballs can be used by insects to keep away other insects. For example, the termite and the fire ant.
