TOPIC 11: Pollution in the Baltic

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3007228.stm

From St. Petersburg, untreated sewage flows to the Neva river, then to the Baltic. Now half of the fish species are at levels below the critical biological level. Even pregnant women are warned not to eat herring because of dioxins. The Baltic sea is suffering from lack of oxygen because of all the untreated sewage, allowing the plankton and algae growth. Having only a narrow outlet to the ocean, the water will take 25-30 years to refresh itself.

People in St Petersburg are mainly being irresponsible to their own country's water by simply throwing waste products into the water without what is going to happen next. Such case will affect the fishes growth, which in other words, affects Sweden's economy.
